My baby was 14 yesterday, where did the years go? Anyway we were determined to give her a good day so she didn't miss her UK friends too much. As usual we were up early (what is it about this country and early mornings?) at 7.30 am and after the usual brekkie and birthday presents we were off on our first real day out. Australia Zoo being our destination, crocs, kangaroos, koala's and elephants galore! well we haven't seen them in the wild, kangaroos and koala, that is, so a zoo it had to be. It was a lovely trip up there and we were able to see a little of the glass mountains - fascinating mountains, they just stick up out of nowhere in random shapes, will go back again another time to explore further. Arrived at the zoo at about 10.40am finally getting in after getting an annual ticket - as usual more cost effective as we know we'll be back again this year. Our first surprise was how quiet it was , in the UK on a sunny day everybody would be out, but no, it was really quiet.. weird but good! So we ambled round and saw the alligators and crocs, then went to the wild warrior show. It was amazing, they had lots of birds of different kinds, including kites, cockatoos, lorakeets, macaws that all flew into the arena (some from their cages), almost synchronised flying and then flew out another exit - really well trained. then came the keeper feeding the very large crocodile in different situations - very brave, or stupid! After lunch we then went and saw and fed the kangaroos, patted koalas, watched the keepers play ball with the tigers and my highlight of the day was then feeding the elephants!
We finally left about 4pm tired, sore feet but very happy!
We then went on to Caloundra on the coast and went for a swim in the sea - it was like being in a bath, only with some rather large waves which took us under a few times, would have been great with the body boards though. At the end of the beach was a lovely salt water pool and some free showers and changing rooms - all very civilised. So a welcome rest but great fun.
Coming home was not so great, as we got back to Brisbane it was raining!!! the car even aquaplaned at times, a bit scary! However it had stopped enough for us to go out and get a chinese - it was really tasty but somewhat more expensive than the one we went to in Oke. So a lovely day was had by all :)
Today has been somewhat quieter, Josh went into Brisbane for the day with some school friends, still haven't established quite what he got up to.... we did church which was followed by a sausage sizzle and had a good time chatting to some more people, then came home to pour over more house plans, ironing, skype and now bed, ready for another week of work, school, job applications and house decisions!
I'll post zoo pictures tomorrow.
Sounds as though Rebecca had a good birthday! Time really does fly eh?
ReplyDeleteIt sounds as if you are settling in to a normal routine too, and now that you are at work I'm sure it feels more like home and less like you're on vacation!
Keep the news coming, it's always good to have read on how you all are!
